As part of our adoption contract, adopters are required to start their heartworm prevention right away. Is that something that you support? The minimum amount of time a newly adopted dog needs to be on preventative is 6 months, regardless of season. Do you support this approach?

We bring dogs from the Mayan Riviera and from Puebla. Puebla is in a very high elevation and they do not have mosquitoes. However, dogs from the Mayan Rivera could contract. All of our dogs are tested prior to travel, but due to the 6 month gestation period, we ask that dogs exposed to mosquitoes start treatment upon their arrival in Canada. We can provide the test to adopters, who can share it with you.

Training is mandatory for all dogs adopted through DIBS, and we encourage adopters to use training first to deal with behavioural issues before other methods, unless there is an underlying medical issue causing the behaviour (such as pain). Is your clinic supportive of this approach?

Did you know that most reputable rescues require dogs be returned to the rescue vs euthanized for behavioural issues?

We want to ensure vets are aware of this, as adoptive families are contractually bound by this as part of their adoption contract.
